Heresy Era command squad

I thought I'd take a short break from INQ28 for a moment to paint up a Space Marine Command squad from Forgeworld, and to try my hand at an idea that's been niggling at the back of my mind for some time.

I've never had a very steady hand for tiny banner designs, and coming across the work of Heironymous Bosche I was taken by just how fitting his work would be for a 40k era banner.

These chaps were painted in my house chapter style, white with dark grey. The banner was quite simple to achieve. I measured the space and worked up a design in good ol' Photoshop. The paper I used was a bit too thick with hindsite, but soaking it in water for 10 seconds softened it up enough for me to be able to stick it down with a combination of varnish and PVA. This was then given a couple of coats of wash and drybrush. I think the result is pretty convincing.

The Rogue Trader's Retinue

I had a chance to paint up my converted Empire command squad.

I wanted these guys to look regal and somewhat removed from the whole idea of waging battle against an alien horde. They're investors, speculators, financing the Rogue Trader's explorations on the understanding that they receive a share of the spoils. The lord and his retainer probably occupy a well-healed position in some baroque hive spire. They bring the mad old man along for those situations that demand a smattering of ultra-violence.

New year, new stuff

Happy new year.

I thought I'd start the new year off with a set of characters that might accompany my Rogue Trader on his travels. The Solar Auxilia militia detachment are coming along wuite nicely but my eye was also caught by the Forgeworld Empire Command set, which I thought would look great given a 40k makeover. They're incredibly rich in detail and really baroque.

The main guy I envisaged as kind of like Noel Coward with a Bolt Pistol, asking his retainers to select him a target. The banner bearer is a family associate, whilst I envisaged the flagellant as some kind of mad relative kept locked away in some god-foresaken attic until needed.

These are all pretty basic conversions although I think they add character. The banner bearer's hellpistol was cut down from a scions hellgun, whilst I've found that servoskulls make a really great source of tubes and wires etc.

These guys are the Rogue Trader's investors, financing his travels and insisting on accompanying him for whatever spoils he uncovers.
